I need a check book ledger to write my checks in and have a way to have them balance I have used excel for years however I am having a problem with subtraction.
Hi there! It sounds like you are trying to create a running balance.
In Excel, the easiest way to do this is to add the previous balance to the current deposit and subtract the check amount. Try this formula in your Balance column (assuming Row 2 is your first entry):
Let me know if that fixes the subtraction issue!
Keeping a running balance can be tricky if the formulas aren’t set up perfectly.
We actually have a ‘Checkbook Register’ template included in this list (The Ultimate Personal Finance Tools (Excel Templates)) that handles all the subtraction and balancing automatically. You just enter the check number and amount, and it does the rest. Give that a try and see if it saves you some time!
Thanks
