Excel Shortcut for Inserting ASCII Characters
Here’s the Shortcut for Inserting ASCII Characters in Excel. Excel has a built-in shortcut using the Alt key and your numeric keypad that unlocks the entire world of ASCII characters! In just a few simple steps, you can transform your spreadsheets with a variety of symbols, arrows, and more.
Here’s how to use the Alt code shortcut:
- Position your cursor in the cell where you want to insert the symbol.
- Hold down the Alt key on your keyboard. This is the key next to the space bar on most keyboards.
- Using the numeric keypad (the block of numbers on the right side of your keyboard, not the numbers above the alphabet keys), type the decimal code for the symbol you want.
- Release the Alt key.
Poof! Your desired ASCII character should magically appear in the cell.
For example:
- To insert the copyright symbol (©), hold Alt and type 0169 on the numeric keypad.
- To insert a degree symbol (°), hold Alt and type 0176.
- Need a heart symbol (♥)? Hold Alt and type 03.
Tips:
- Make sure your Num Lock key is turned on for the numeric keypad to function correctly.
- Keep a cheat sheet (provided above) of commonly used ASCII codes handy for quick reference.

ASCII in Excel Formulas with CHAR and CODE Functions
Excel comes with built-in functions CHAR and CODE to deal with ASCII codes. We can insert ASCII Characters using CHAR function in your Excel formulas. And get the ASCII code for the Given Character using CODE function in Excel.
CODE Function to retrieve the ASCII code of a character:
The CODE function acts as your decoder ring. Simply provide it with a character as input, and it returns the corresponding ASCII code as a number. For instance, the formula =CODE(“A”) translates the letter “A” to its ASCII code of 65.
=CODE("P") // returns 80 =CODE("b") // returns 98 (lowercase characters have different codes than uppercase) =CODE("1") // returns 49 (numbers also have their own ASCII codes) =CODE("!") // returns 33 (symbols have unique codes as well) =CODE("$") // returns 36
CHAR Function to Insert ASCII Character
The CHAR function flips the script! Feed it an ASCII code as a number, and it transforms it into the corresponding character. So, =CHAR(64) produces the symbol “@” in your cell.
=CHAR(65) // Returns Capital Letter "A" =CHAR(97) // Returns Small Letter "a" =CHAR(169) //Returns Copyright Symbol (©) =CHAR(174) //Returns Registered Trademark (®) =CHAR(176) //Returns Degree Symbol (°) =CHAR(3) //Returns Heart Symbol (♥) =CHAR(251) //Returns Checkmark (√)
Excel Formula
Now, let’s put these functions together for some formulaic fun! Imagine you want a cell to display a copyright symbol (©) based on a TRUE/FALSE condition in another cell. Here’s the formula:
=IF(A1=TRUE, CHAR(169), "")
This formula checks cell A1. If it’s TRUE, the formula uses the CHAR function to insert the copyright symbol with its ASCII code (169). If A1 is FALSE, the formula displays nothing (“”).
Exploring the Potential:
- The possibilities are endless! Use these functions to:
- Dynamically insert checkboxes (√) or multiplication signs (×) based on calculations.
- Create custom progress bars with ASCII characters.
- Generate unique product codes incorporating letters and numbers from specific ASCII ranges.
Beyond the Basics:
While these functions primarily deal with basic ASCII characters, remember that Excel supports a wider range of characters through Unicode. For more advanced symbol needs, explore the UNICHAR function, which offers greater character compatibility.

You instruct to use ALT + 0176 to get the degree sign. But the Excel table does not list 0176. It lists only 176. How is a person supposed to know that the user needs to add a zero to a code listed in the table? For example, the table lists 176 for the degree symbol, but the instructions are to type 0176. So when is zero needing to be added, and why is the Excel symbol table not showing that zero that needs to be used?
